Park History

Ford School was built in 1844 under a huge burr oak that measured 4 ft. in diameter. It got its name from the Ford family, who owned the farm land. Besides the 16 ft. x 24 ft. log school building, the property also featured a woodshed (for coal and corncobs) and two outhouses. Water was hauled in buckets from the Ford farm pump.

Later the log facility was replaced with a frame building; it had hardwood maple floors, wainscoting around the inside, eight rows of seats for the eight grades, a teacher’s desk, blackboard, piano or organ, and a pot-bellied coal stove. It closed in 1942. The building is located on the former Stonegate Nursery site on Algonquin Road.
