Park History

Turtle IslandTurtle Island was known simply as “The Island” during the 1940s, ‘50s, and ‘60s.  It was surrounded by numerous snakes and snapping turtles. It had a bridge made from three telephone poles with boards nailed across it; there were no railings.  When the area flooded, the makeshift bridge would float away and more telephone poles were needed to build another. In the late 1990s the Village decided upon a name for the island surrounded by snapping turtles. The island now known as Turtle Island.
