Automated Red Light Cameras Active at Randall and Acorn Lane On December 19th 2007, the Village of Lake in the Hills activated an automated red light enforcement camera at the intersection of Randall Road and Acorn Lane. As of January 15th 2008, Lake in the Hills Police has issued 164 written warning violation notifications to drivers who violated the traffic control devices at that intersection. Effective January 18th, drivers who are in violation of red light running will be issued a citation. Photo enforcement cameras placed at intersections take pictures of the intersection after the light has turned red. These pictures of the vehicle’s license plates are then sent to the violator with the appropriate fine. A 2005 U.S. Federal Highway Administration-funded study estimated total societal cost reductions from red light camera programs in seven U.S. cities to be over $14 million per year, or over $38,000 for each studied red light camera location. A lifesaving bill for high risk intersections in eight Illinois counties became state law as Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich signed House Bill 4835. The legislation allows communities in Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, Madison, McHenry, St. Clair and Will counties to use red light cameras to reduce red light running crashes and violations. Previously, only the City of Chicago had been permitted by state law to use red light cameras. The latest statistics from Chicago show a 30 percent reduction in red light running violations at the intersections equipped with red light cameras. The city is expanding its camera program and expects to have cameras at 60 intersections by 2007. “Any driver and vehicle that violates the traffic control devices at the intersection of Randall and Acorn Lane will be issued a citation. By Illinois State Law the registered owner of the vehicle will be issued the citation." |
