Lake in the Hills is located in Southeast McHenry County, approximately 45 miles northwest of downtown Chicago, and is about a 50-minute drive from O’Hare International Airport. The Village is easily accessible from several major roadways, including Rt. 31 and Rt. 47, Randall Road, and Algonquin Road. Access to I-90 is just minutes away along Randall Road and also Rt. 47, which has a new full-access interchange at I-90.
Randall Road, Algonquin Road, and Lakewood Road provide the largest concentrations of commercial development in the Village. Large retailers such as Lowe's and Costco anchor the Randall Road corridor, while neighborhood commercial and smaller national retailers are along the Algonquin Road and Lakewood Road corridors.
The Village has identified 8 Target Areas for commercial retail development. The Community Development Division promotes these Target Areas to best fit retailers and investors by making routine contacts, attending local and national trade shows, and networking with commercial real estate professionals. Lake in the Hills is also home to over 500 existing businesses.
The Village’s Comprehensive Plan puts a focus on strengthening the tax base through economic development efforts. The main goal for commercial development as stated in the plan is “to maintain the quality of existing commercial development and expand the Village’s tax base by creating new areas for retail, restaurant, and service uses, enhancing the identity of Lake in the Hills as a destination shopping area for adjacent communities.” The Comprehensive Plan encourages the investigation of economic development tools such as small business assistance and tax rebates.
The Village has an Economic Incentive Policy that provides the tools that are necessary to carry out the objectives of the Villages’ Comprehensive Plan and Strategic Plan for Economic Development which will provide for growth opportunities that otherwise may not be possible without the aid of incentives.

Our proactive economic development program is designed to promote commercial investment and job creation. The Village’s Community Development staff is poised to provide assistance for any type of new business or expansion or re-location of an existing one. Staff provides efficient, confidential, and meaningful assistance with site locations, data/demographics support and permitting procedures, and business retention and expansion visits.
